A new short story—The Indomitable, Part V: The Warrior Voice—has been released!
Justine—accompanied still by Lady Amerie and Ser Marcus—return to the northern settlement after months away in the south of the new land. There they discover several sites to which the insurgents could build cities, erect fortifications, and raise fleets against King Adrian’s wrath. Yet not is all as Justine left it, and she must make the most difficult choice in her young life.
A new short story—The Indomitable, Part IV: Mother’s Light—has been released!
Justine makes camp in the dead of winter, deep within a dark forest. Lady Amerie and Ser Marcus joined with her as she searches for settlement sites. Doubts have rifled through her mind ever since she set out, but what awaits to the west may be the most jarring of all.
It has been a busy couple of weeks and there is a lot I want to discuss today, starting with The Indomitable. Simply put, not since Aerona Harkan has a character enthralled me more than Justine Deuvers. I originally intended for The Indomitable to be a four part series that would explain her origins, detail her meeting with Prophet Gabriel, and whence she lead Dalia’s forces against the Darkness. All of that content is still on the table, but it will be done much more expansively. I am still planning the back end of the narrative, but it would not surprise me if we reach part ten of The Indomitable. Thus Terror of the Black Storm and Birth of Madness series are being pushed to early 2018. They are stories that will still be included when I publish A Prelude to Darkness in March 2018, but I think there is a tremendous opportunity to delve deeply into an amazing character and journey in Justine Duvan.
A new short story—The Indomitable, Part III: The Mother—has been released!
Justine brings hot stew and hard bread to Father Curtis Lakin, who has secluded himself in his cabin, refusing all visitors save for the former knight-captain. The priest has seemingly lost all but his faith, and when talks drifts to the Mother’s hand in the fate of her children, Justine becomes disgusted and leaves. Yet as Justine soon learns, fate is not a fickle mistress who can be so easily fled.
A new short story—The Indomitable, Part II: Her Vows—has been released!
A knight-captain no longer, Lady Justine Deuvers has
betrayed her kingdom. Her own life—along with those
of her knights and the men and women gathered in the
basement of the tavern—are still at risk. She chooses to
flee with them, but what awaits will compel her to make
a choice that she must carry for the rest of her days.

My short story releases continue next Friday with the first part of The Indomitable series that will span the next four (or more!) weeks. The story follows the principle events in the life of the first Voice, Justine Deuvers, and the crucibles that earned her the title ‘Indomitable.’ For those who have read Darkness Rising from cover to cover, you know that Justine lived three hundred years before the events of my first novel. Thus there will be plenty of new characters, characters that you have read references of, and perhaps some returning characters too.
Following that, there will be two more serialized entries that will take us into December (where I will stop pushing short stories so I can finish Chains of Fate for release on December 15). The first of these entries is titled Terror of the Black Storm. This series will focus entirely on the Isilian Imperium, and eventually, the war with Dalia that occurs before Darkness Rising. The Birth of Madness series will follow afterward, and those stories will visit the Trechtian invasion of Dalia from the perspective of the Marcanas brothers.
Also, please do consume the short stories before January 2018—for I will be taking them all down then. I will give all those stories a heavy edit pass as I prepare them for my first short story collection, A Prelude to Darkness. I will offer more details as we get closer to the March 16, 2018 release date (and not the least of which will be the additional content outside of the short stories).
